Get fit with your pets with Doga at The Village!

Shockingly, 53 percent of U.S. dogs are overweight or obese, up from 45 percent just four years ago. So says Dr. Ernie Ward, a veterinarian and founder of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention in Calabash, North Carolina, who told AP that “overweight pets can suffer diabetes, joint problems, heart disease and decreased life expectancy, just like obese people.”

The Camelback Village is doing its part to keep your dogs fit and healthy with “Doga” — pronounced like “Yoga” — classes on the back lawn about six times a year. Organized by Sarah Pyper, the one-hour classes give pets 30 minutes to run around and get to know each other, and another 30 minutes of focused stretching designed to build strength, balance and flexibility. “It's amazing how the dogs calm down,” remarks Linda Hertzberg, Group Fitness Director.

For a $5 donation (or more) that goes to Cavalier Rescue USA, both canine and human participants enjoy a fun time and walk home with a bag of healthy dog treats from Puppy Belly Deli. Bikes and other great prizes are also auctioned off, on occasion.

Check for “Doga” dates and times on the Camelback Group Fitness schedule throughout the year, and call the Front Desk at 602-840-6412 to sign up.
